Arizona’s original “green” architect, was born in 1869 in Pittsburgh. She was a trailblazer in every way. Mary became an architect when it was an unheard vocation for a woman. She was a very able, artistic student and a strong advocate of women’s individuality.
She worked for the Fred Harvey Company for more than forty years and her design technique was to craft buildings out of local materials using American Indian motifs. Her work at the Grand Canyon, six major structures including Bright Angel Lodge, Hermit’s Rest, and the Watchtower, set a precedent for other national parks.
